Kitchen Trends That Are Not Just Best of Houzz 2016
For some design professionals, putting the terms "kitchen trends" and "Houzz" together in the same sentence can be a prickly subject. There is a great amount of older thinking professionals out there that do not want to capture an untapped market, to engage with them, have to answer questions, or upload their portfolio to another website. To them I say, good for you. I don't need the added competition.
Yet, it's hard to ignore that the world has changed and consumers habits have changed and the way we uses spaces has changed along with it. As the CKID Design Team embarks to the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (Las Vegas, NV) and the Interior Design Show (Toronto, ON) this week, I can't help but research some up and coming trends that we need to be looking out for.
It's not what you got, it's how you use it
According to the Houzz Data, the medium kitchen size remains unchanged between 150 square feet and 250 square feet, but the priorities in how we use our kitchen has changed.
We are looking for:
A kitchen with easy storage
A kitchen that can be dressed up or down
A kitchen that is easy to clean
A kitchen that we can welcome guests into
A kitchen to cook with and for a lot of people
*Houzz reports that we are spending 3+ hours per day in the kitchen and that's second to the bedroom.
Driving factors of change
Why we want a different kitchen than the one we have is simple - we want to connect better to people and more with nature. Most people are tired of their kitchen - and I don't blame them because I'm tired of mine - but what is so tiring? It's the mess and the style. It seems that those 3+ hours per day are taking their visual and functional toll.
What we want
Gone are the pantries with doors and walls, (not that we aren't still doing them), but pantry cabinets are being merged with functional types of storage in relation to task areas.
Another area of change is the clean-up centre: with new sinks, faucets, recycling, and organics. Where did the trash go? It's smaller... to say the least.
