This article from our CKID Archives is an excellent resource about our design studio’s process selecting finishes and materials for our projects no matter whether they are:

  • A Full Service Design Project

  • A Virtual Online Design service or package

  • Or… a Design Palette

A qualified designer will use physical samples of each finish and material for a given project to curate them at the same time. This process ensures that all the materials do not clash with each other. Significant mistakes can happen if we were to rely upon digital images, social media, and website product imagery to verify and select materials and finishes for a project.

Simply put. We need to physically see the samples interact with eachother in different light conditions to verify our project recommendations to a client. That way we know they will coordinate all successfully together for our design projects as in this multi award winning project in Vancouver’s iconic Kitsilano neighbourhood.

Planning A Scheme

One of the designer services we offer clients is, what we in the business call,

Interior Decorating.

It's not everything we do, but it is an important part of the design process.

We provide:

  • A colour scheme

  • Furniture

  • Custom soft furnishings

  • Custom window coverings

We call this Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment, or FF&E for short.

When we build a scheme and style, we can take 100% of the direction from our clients.

My eye for colour is sensitive, but it is anything but finite or dictated by a style or theme. I believe that designers and decorators need not be married to only doing one type of style. My view is that just because I happen to like a couple of things in particular it does not mean that I'm not open to suggestions.

Below is an example of a scheme that I'm working on with a current client at our Kits Point Residence. Take a gander, because it's really quite interesting.

This is what we walked out of Layers and Layers with. It's amazing, but below is what we ended up after a few glasses of Prosecco and some careful editing:

So, how does this all fit into the overall materials and finishes for this project? Check out the finishes and materials below, because this one is AMAZEBALLS.

Conclusion

This award winning project involved multiple details like custom made to order window treatments, upholstery, cabinetry, shower enclosure, countertops, as well as built in features for storage, a work station, and a wall bed for extra sleeping accommodation for guests. It is essential we get all the details right the first time. To ensure a project’s success we:

  1. Utilised physical samples to understand the unique nuances of each material and finish physically in person

  2. Selected and confirmed the materials and finishes together at the same time

  3. We reviewed each grouping of finish and material samples together in different light conditions to ensure every detail coordinated flawlessly together.

No matter whether it is a full service design project or a online design service we have been using the same process since we were founded in 2011 as Corey Klassen Interior Design. It has been over a decade since this project was successfully completed. Each detail has stood the test of time for not only the colour scheme we selected but also the quality materials of the upholstery and window treatment.

Our Design Palettes can work just like the elements we showcase in this article. Each have been evaluated based upon our expertise with colour, and custom made to order products like cabinetry and upholstery. Our years of industry knowledge of what is available across the Canadian marketplace for quality, durability and value is also built into each palette. To ensure a productive discussion of how a material can be used by your contractor, trade professional or a custom work room in your region re-upholstering a treasured piece for you.

It is literally a shopping list you can use for a design project with us or as a stand alone short list to provide your contractor to use for the basic hard finishes of say a home remodel like hardwood flooring, wall tile, and countertops that works within a tried and tested colour scheme.
