A Well Designed Business with Design Biz Live Episodes
(Updated February 28, 2023, by Andrew Luketic) The following was a brief post from our principal founding designer, Corey Klassen, to announce why he was out of office in March 2019. This was a launching event for LuAnn Nigara and her podcast, taking it to the next level. It was a live speaking event that had some of her most interesting speakers together in one place for designers to come and hear and learn from each other. LuAnn has grown this niche podcast into different related educational services that help designers analyze, improve, and expand their services. So I included links below to all his podcast interviews with LuAnn as well as a little insight as to who LuAnn is and why she is so fabulous. There is a new documentary launching about her, produced by Jude Charles, and I have included a trailer for you to check it out.
Who is LuAnn Nigara?
LuAnn is the host of the popular podcast A Well Designed Business which focuses on the interior design industry. It can also be found on Apple Podcasts: A Well Designed Business. There are now literally thousands of her interviews with top interior designers and brands in the industry. The list of topics she covers is quite impressive. She finds just the right things to ask and explore further.
She has found a niche with regards to finding out what it takes to be in the design industry, along with the ups and downs of operating a creative business. LuAnn’s podcast is now a well recognised resource for Interior Designers across North America and beyond. This link showcases little bit about why she is a top rated interviewer.
Articulate Ties to A Well Designed Business
As Design Director for Articulated, I get to peruse our archives and make sure that we honour the foundations of our design studio. Our founding interior designer has been active within his professional community for decades as an educator, writer, speaker, and advocate. You can hear it when you listen to the banter between him and LuAnn. She brings out the best in the people she chooses to interview. Having been introduced to her in 2020 by Sarah Daniele of MyDoma Studio I have always found her both insightful and forthright. Whether this was in person or in her podcasts,
Her podcast might not be on our clients radars, but as I said, she is very popular with a large portion of designers across North America. Not only has she interviewed high-profile designers like Nate Berkus and Sandra Funk. She has 12 interviews with Corey and his designer cohort, Judith A. Neary, who is a collaborator of his.
She engages in different topics that relate to the interior design industry, related products, as well as the different business models they work in. Basically it covers how to run a well designed business. Which is the title of her podcast. Now Corey and Judith have an interesting rapport which is ideal for this frank banter that LuAnn engages her guests with. It is a side of Corey and Judith that some people do not get to hear. What are their collaborations? They were 2 of 10 subject matter experts that turned into the content coordinators for The Kitchen And Bath Planning Guidelines 4th Edition. Which saw them both honoured by Kitchen And Bath Design News as Innovators of 2021 and 2022 for their work with accessible design.

Okay, let me start over… At the end of March 2019, I headed to LuAnn Nigara Live: It’s About The Conversation as a guest panelist. It was based out in New Jersey, her hometown. Exciting, right? If you don’t know who LuAnn is or why that is a big deal, then let me spare not one more minute explaining. (The link above has a video excerpt of what was a full day event)
It was pretty amazing/epic/outstanding to be asked to speak with Judith and the other panelists! She continues to host in person and virtual events for designers to learn from each other and hone their craft.
What is #DesignBizLive?
This cohort of mine Judith A. Neary, CMKBD and I have been regular occurring guests under a topic we call “Design Biz Live.” Since we started appearing on Lu’s podcast, we have always taken the approach of being honest and truthful about the design business - because it’s not so easy sometimes and things can get really challenging.
This is not my only collaboration with Judith, as we have both later worked on the Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines 4th Edition together as both subject matter experts and later as the two content coordinators for it. This led to each of us being recognized by Kitchen & Bath Design News Magazine as Top Innovators of 2021 & 2022.
